Causes of Cavities That You Need to Look Out For

Those who are saddled with tooth decay often wonder what causes cavities.  Cavities occur when there are bacteria living in the mouth that forms an acid that subsequently wears away at the teeth.  If tooth decay is not treated, it can lead to an infection, significant pain and even the loss of the tooth.  The tooth decay process commences with damaged enamel that cannot be noticed with the naked eye.

Some common cavity causes

The decay gradually progresses deeper into the tooth until it reaches the pulp.  The pulp is highly sensitive as it contains nerves and blood vessels.  If the infection breaches this portion of the tooth, you will definitely notice the presence of the cavity. Here is a closer look at the specific causes of cavities and the treatment.

Poor Oral Hygiene

The failure to floss and brush or inadequate flossing and brushing can lead to cavities.  Even skipping the mouthwash heightens the odds of cavities.  You should use fluoridated tap water, toothpaste and mouth rinse every single day and night.  Brush your teeth at least two times per day.  If possible, floss and brush after each meal.  Your brushing sessions should last at least a couple minutes.

Poor Nutrition

You will be that much more likely to have a cavity if you consume an abundance of foods that are high in carbohydrates, sugar or acid.  Consume a healthy diet with diverse foods including colorful vegetables and fruits.  Skip the sugar-laden and acidic foods and drinks to maintain the integrity of your teeth across posterity.  If you absolutely eat such foods, it will help to floss, brush and/or rinse so the little bits of food left on the teeth can't wear away at your tooth enamel.

Dry Mouth

Saliva is essential to stop the growth of plaque in your mouth.  If you have dry mouth, it will make it that much easier for plaque to grow and cover your teeth.  Dry mouth can be caused by genetics, prescription medications and medical conditions.  The dentist can help you overcome your dry mouth and prevent subsequent tooth decay.

Grinding of the Teeth

Plenty of people grind their teeth and have no idea it is occurring.  Teeth grinding usually takes place when sleeping or when under considerable stress.  If the teeth grind enough, decay will occur as the outer portion of the tooth enamel is stripped away.  The use of a bite guard will help prevent tooth grinding.

Age and Genetics

Genetics and age play important roles in the frequency and extent of cavities.  Cavities become more common as one continues to age.  Those enamel issues and deep crevices in your teeth are passed on from your parents.

Sugary Food

Bacteria in the mouth chows down on sugar from candy, soda and other foods/beverages. This process leads to the formation of cavities.  Do your best to avoid sugary foods including foods with natural sugar.  If possible, clean your teeth after consuming a sugary or acidic food/drink.  If you do not have access to toothpaste and a toothbrush, rinse out your mouth with water following your treatment.
