Dental crowns have been acting as restoration methods for damaged teeth for some time now. They act as caps to cover an entire tooth in order to protect it and prevent it from incurring further damage. Dental crowns are typically used when a person has decayed or eroded parts of a tooth. They can provide a lot of benefits to a person when chewing or even when simply just smiling.

However, just like with any other restoration method, the dental crown can always get damaged if proper care isn’t given to it. Dental crowns are made to be strong and durable but they often get damaged when a person doesn’t care for them well enough.

Today, we will discuss what a person should do when their dental crown is damaged. Knowing how to handle a damaged dental crown can be beneficial for anyone who has one.

Make an appointment with the dentist

When a person cracks or damages their dental crown, it is imperative that they speak with their dentist immediately. A damaged dental crown could provide a lot of harmful risks to the tooth and the person’s mouth overall. It is best to schedule an appointment or attempt to visit the dentist as soon as the crack occurs. If the dentist’s office isn’t open then a person may need to visit a dental emergency clinic.

In some cases, the damage to the crown may not require immediate attention from a medical professional but a person still should set up an appointment in order to get it looked at sooner rather than later.

Rinse

If and when a dental crown gets damaged, it is best that a person rinses their mouth with a warm saltwater mixture until they can get to the dentist. A warm saltwater mixture will cleanse the mouth of any floating crown particles to ensure that the person doesn’t swallow them. The salt water mixture will also clean the entire mouth from any bacteria that may have been released when the crown got damaged.

Avoid using the damaged tooth for chewing

It is best to avoid chewing on the side of the mouth that the damaged crown is on at least until a dentist has examined the area. Avoiding using that side of the mouth for chewing will ensure that the crown isn’t damaged further causing pain or discomfort.

Damaged dental crowns can cause pain and irritation for one. There may be sharp sides or sensitivity to the tooth so it’s best to avoid using it until a dentist can examine it properly. Immediately schedule an appointment with the dentist or get seen by a dental professional in order to avoid further damage and treat the current.
