Taking Care of Your Dental Crowns: Don’t Forget to Brush!

Thinking you can slack on regular oral care when you have dental crowns? Even though you now have dental crowns over one or more of your teeth, you still need to take care of your teeth. That includes brushing them exactly how you would a normal tooth. There are some people who think that once they get a certain dental procedure performed, they do not have to pay as close attention to their oral health anymore. Not true! Even when you are having a dental problem and choose a dental solution, it still is necessary for you to keep up good oral health habits on a daily basis.

General care of dental crowns

So how does one go about providing general care for their dental crowns? They must brush their teeth at least twice a day and floss their teeth at least once a day. This level of care is nothing out of the ordinary, as this is considered to be a fairly normal oral health care routine.

Because it is possible for crowns to break or become damaged, chewing on anything hard must be avoided. Common causes of tooth and crown fractures include chewing on ice, pens, and hard candy, all of which should be avoided. It is also necessary to avoid eating anything that is super sticky, as it is possible to pull a dental crown out of its place.

Potential complications of not brushing well with crowns

What are some of the potential complications if someone who has dental crowns does not brush their teeth often enough?

Too much plaque buildup

When the teeth are not brushed often enough, plaque will begin to build up around the crown, which could eventually lead to a cavity. This could become painful and costly since the crown will likely have to be removed to repair the tooth.

A mouth infection

Not brushing or flossing on a regular basis means that bacteria will start to build up around the crown area, potentially leading to a painful mouth infection.

A gum disease diagnosis

If the teeth and gums are not properly cared for, it is highly possible that a gum disease diagnosis will be given. Unfortunately, treatment for gum disease can sometimes end up being painful and unpleasant, but it can be avoided with proper brushing.
