The Differences Between CEREC Crowns and Lab-Made Crowns

When you are in need of one or more dental crowns, it is always a good idea that you look into all of your available crown options. This includes knowing what you should do when one or more of your teeth are at risk of being lost, as a crown can make your teeth stronger. If one or more of your teeth are in jeopardy then getting a dental crown, also known as a dental cap, may help you avoid the loss of those teeth. While there are several types of dental crowns available, they generally fall into one of two categories. This article will delineate the main differences between CEREC crowns and lab-made crowns.

CEREC crowns

CEREC crowns are made using a special in-house machine, which allows the dental crowns to be made directly in the dentist's office while the patient is waiting. This is why CEREC crowns are also known as same-day crowns because the crowns can be made and placed into the dental patient's mouth all on the same day. A CEREC machine simply allows busy patients the convenience they want when they are in need of a dental crown for tooth restoration reasons.

In-house CEREC crown benefits include:

  • Ability to choose from a few different types of crown materials
  • Customization for each individual patient
  • No gummy impression required
  • No need to wear a temporary crown until the permanent crown is made
  • Can preserve more of the original tooth
  • They look like natural teeth

Lab-made crowns

When a dentist does not have a CEREC machine in-office, then they must use the help of an off-site dental lab to make the crowns they need for their patients. This means that the dentist must rely on the people working in these off-site labs to make the crowns exactly as they should be made so they will be a custom fit for the patient and will usually take anywhere between two and three weeks to complete.

The benefits of lab-made crowns include:

  • Ability to choose from a variety of crown materials
  • Customization for each patient
  • Can be made to match the rest of the teeth

When you are in need of one or more dental crowns so you do not lose any of your teeth, then understand that it is important for you to get your crowns made and placed in your mouth as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the higher your chances are when it comes to your losing one or more of your teeth and you do not want that to happen. Your teeth are meant to last you your entire life, and we are here to help make sure that your teeth last as long as absolutely possible. Knowing the difference between CEREC crowns and lab-made crowns can help you make the right decision for your oral health. Ready to take care of your teeth today? Give us a call!
